Hers is a world of painted porcelain tea sets, of rococo infused decorums, of roses, silk ropes and round lollipops. The women she paints are princesses of an unblushing dreamland, who adorn their bodies with precious corsets, and live surrounded by pet octopuses and other fabulous creatures. MURMUR is now part of that universe, which is the perfect pretext to take you on a short journey through her amazing art and vision:

Tell us a bit about how your art developed over time and how this universe that you now paint came to be. Were you influenced by manga in any way? Which were the main pillars for your artistic style?

First of all, yes! Manga ans Anime were a big influence on me since I was very little. Most of the TV shows on our 80’s one-channel Israeli TV were Japanese Anime. The name Kukula actually comes from one of my favorite TV shows as a tiny kid. In general, I think TV was a big influence because we had lots of classical music and ballet airing as well, and I was a little weird kid with not many friends, so I watched whatever was on. I loved opera shows and I think it formed the way I’m thinking now, as a very romantic and dramatic adult. I had Coppélia ballet on VHS and watched it a million times. I loved when she was acting like a living doll, so that must have formed the general concept in my work today.

Your paintings have a magical way of mixing innocence with eroticism. How do you relate to these two aspects of a woman’s personality?

Being a woman is a quite confusing role. When we are young women or little girls, we already know what kind of women we will be one day – the innocence is there, but also the awareness of womanhood is already being formed. As older women, I believe we always remember how we were as younger women. We are still going to make similar fashion decisions. This is why pink sparkly fabric will always be in. Girls love how I dress more than anyone.

Some women believe that we choose our fashion for the pleasure of men, and some do so. I call it a dishonest style, rather you fighting it or obeying… you are not you.

How do clothes help you live fantasies and express hidden sides of your personality in real life?

As I mentioned before, I’m very inspired by stage performances, it’s like we have a role in life that can be changed daily by our mood, and this role needs a costume to be perfected. Whatever our mood will be that day, it will be the reason why we choose to wear what we choose. I really don’t understand people who don’t like fashion, it’s just a part of being human, no? Kind of like not liking desserts and only eating dry pasta and raw eggs.

If MURMUR were one of your paintings, what it would look like?

Well, I already painted MURMUR twice. The brand’s designs convey to my work this strength of a mature, independent, opinionated woman. A role I sometimes can’t portray easily. It’s so feminine and detailed, but structured and classic. It’s also timeless. I will paint it many more times until you’ll ask me to stop.

Three fetish objects that the girls in your paintings surely have in their drawers, and why.

A gag ball to shut up stupid people or to use on one self so she won’t get in trouble. When I was little, I used to curse a lot and called everyone “shit” and “dumb”. One day the daycare teacher put band aid on my mouth for a full day and it made me mad! But today I wish I put band aid on my mouth sometimes… ’cause I say everything!

A rope made of silk with big tassels… to pull things… tie them, and also use as a nice belt!

Thigh high boots, for warmth when you don’t wear pants.

Russian Tea

We are pleased to bring you this is a bone china cup & saucer made in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Kukula’s females confidently strut and recline in historic garb traditionally worn by men of the aristocracy in suggestively famous landscapes and gardens reminiscent of the great monarchs and often times painted by male artists of the past. “All my paintings are inspired by British 18th century portrait painters like Gainsborough and Reynolds so there will be an American and French Revolutionary vibe but the characters in my paintings are strong females now in place of their male predecessors.” A contemporary twist dating the paintings to present day and further supporting the supremacy of her females can be found in the inclusion of present-day designer, Creepyyeha’s fashions; Creepyyeha’s leather and buckled designs echo lingerie yet enforce female sovereignty through fashions that echo dominatrix styles. Through presence, fashion and posture, each woman decides and fights for Herself, as she triumphantly continues her own revolutionary war on gender conventions.

Special interview with American Art Collector

Keylime Parfait print release

KuKula Print ReleaseKeylime ParfaitKUKULAKey Lime ParfaitGiclee on Rives BFK paperEdition of 50Signed & Numbered by Artist16 x 20 inches paper size$225*Please click here to purchase. http://www.havenartgallery.com/kukula-lilya-and-pussypus-print/ *Shipping & Handling Charges apply at checkout. They made mostly to decorate churches or privet Aristocrats domains. They were extremely expensive or even just priceless and very large many of the time, in order; which I believe, to create power over the viewer. As a creator of “things that can go on walls” Tapestries excites me as much if not even more than viewing an original paintings by one of my favorites artists. The experience of being close to a tapestry is not comparable to the one of a painting that you know from a screen or a book. Though its still an amazing experience and nothing I like more than visit my favorite paintings at the Frick collection, Tapestries create a shock. Knowing an image can be created by very long threads on an very large loom. The planning of it itself feels overwhelming. But we are not living in a world powered by churches and aristocrats. Fans of art come in many shaped and sizes. And even if it was possible to create those divine tapestries like the famous Unicorn in Captivity from the cloisters collection in NY, very few people will be able to enjoy them at their own home. I like to enjoy things in my own home. I like having stuff, and I want tapestries too!I call my art “Neo-Rococo” because I borrow a lot from the last period of the French aristocracy as inspiration. As meter of fact, Not only in art but in life. but I give it my own post modern twist. Be gluten, be fancy but don’t be too rich that you can’t sleep at night. We all have the opportunity to taste glamor. We have machines. We don’t have slaves. We can produce replicas inspired by the Roman church and put it in our bedroom without ruing anyone’s life. This is Elitism for all.

-Kukula

NEWMINDS Studios - exclusive short film & interview

Kukula is proud to share a new and exciting collaboration with NEWMINDS Studios, directed and curated by the creative mind, Aline Pimentel. This fantasy woman is still evident in her work, where she portrays young and dreamy figures where everything is possible and nothing too surreal. "Attitude is important. I like my work to have a feeling of attitude that comes from all the elements in it."

Can you explain your work? "I start with a very rough sketch and then I build in the detail. I work with oils, so it is quite a messy process. I use a lot of books and images for reference. I like the fantasy world I create to be combined with a bit of reality."

Where do your ideas come from? "Looking at things - art, painters, objects. I love artefacts and anything 18th century in design. I'm inspired by everything, particularly clocks and teacups. I have a collection of teacups and I have even created work inspired by the teacups."

Can you tell us about your studio? "It is in my apartment in New Haven Connecticut, but not for much longer as I will be moving soon to Dallas. I have lots of books and things that inspire me. I have a trolley with all of my paints and oils and sketchpads everywhere. It is really my own space."

Who or what inspires you? "I like artists that are opulent with detail and ones that love luxury but they don't take it seriously. That's why I think I like those paintings from the 18th century - they painted a lot of aristocrats with lavish clothes but they made it fun. That's why I really like Gainsbourgh for example, he has a very light touch but it was always about the attitude."

KuKula x RED Valentino store in Hong Kong

KUKULA x REDValentino CAPSULE COLLECTION

A dreamy, romantic, unique universe. Kukula portrays young and dreamy figures - protagonists who express desires and visionary gestures. In her works, everything is possible and imaginable: everything comes to life in a story that goes beyond time and space. There is no cultural boundary in this tale: it’s an evocation of fantasy and the surreal.

The subconscious that emerges in dreams permits free associations, uninhibited thoughts and images without preordained purposes. In Kukula's world, the imagination harmoniously and profoundly blends, with crystalline images without any apparent logical connection, sometimes absurd, but in the overall filled with great symbolism. In this "open" structure, everything is permitted to the young protagonist.

Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli presents a new capsule collection and collaboration with this talented Pop Surrealist artist. It is a new achievement and experience for REDValentino, brand with a romantic yet irreverent spirit; factory that collaborates with all sorts of artists, dedicated to young cosmopolitan women with a romantic cool touch.

shop here:

http://www.redvalentino.com/us/women/kukula

Kai'outi Magazine cover and article

Order the magazine here: http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/1037504

Order the magazine here: http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/1037504

Art Deco-Revival "Moira" Trinket Box by Maison Kukula

To celebrate Kukula's latest gallery show, "Haute Debutante," which draws inspiration from the Art Deco period and style, we have created these "Moira" boxes of Art Deco-inspired wood inlay. individually handcrafted in the United States using no dyes, only the natural colors of the different kinds of wood. We recently caught up with the Connecticut based artist to learn more about her process behind the show, who is celebrating with a reception tonight at AFA Gallery in New York. Kukula admittedly applies herself to excessive research in preparation of a new series. For “Haute Debutantes”, she poured over images of couture fashion designs and researched 18th century paintings of high class society. In such portraits, the artist gave the wearer’s clothes just as much attention to detail as the wearer. Clothing brought more personality to the image, becoming an important part of the painting. Kukula found herself fascinated by the idea of clothing driving artists to create a better work of art. In this tradition, she wanted to use couture designs, the best form of fashion, to craft a masterpiece. When beginning a new piece, she explains, “I create a rough or what I like to call “ugly” in Photoshop because I like to move things around for days. I project it on the board and draw it to details. I like to use blue acrylic before I paint because I can see it through the oil and keep the original lines.”

Left: Gimabattista Valli Couture, Right: “The Creators” by Kukula

The influence of the 1920s and Art Deco illustration can also be felt in her new paintings, an era that in turn is also influenced by different periods. In works such as “The Three Graces”, she borrowed composition elements from artists such as André Edouard Marty’s illustrations, and the highly detailed and elaborate evening dresses created in 1914 by designer Georges Doeuillet. Additional inspiration included French designer Erté’s New Bridges For The Sevens Seas and Gimabattista Valli Couture fashions. As a movement with great meaning to her, Kukula wanted to breathe a new life into the Art Deco era. She calls it a “renascence of Art Deco”. “It was when women really came out to the world as intelligent and free, it was a courageous time for women. The Art Deco movement was interrupted and stopped by the war and this spirit is gone forever. For me, it’s the biggest loss,” she says.

“The Three Graces” by Kukula

Kukula’s reinvention of the debutante is much more than a fashionable rich waif. Her debutantes break traditional conventions as they unapologetically express their newfound identities. When we asked Kukula what the attraction was to debutantes, we got a surprising answer: “Debutantes do not inspire me at all, nor was I one or ever met one. I was creating a “new debutante”, a woman that chooses how to present herself to the world. I was inspired by my friends, women that are creative, smart, independent and very feminine. Their style is an important part of showing they world who they are from the inside. The fashionable in the hip or hyped way, it will be more personal expressive and sometime messy. This is what I wanted to express. They create the world around them according to their choosing and their spirit. It’s very powerful but it’s not aggressive or manly like we used to think of the classic feminist.”

“Haute Debutantes” by Kukula is now on view through September 27th at AFA Gallery in New York.

link to the original post: http://hifructose.com/2015/09/12/a-look-at-kukulas-creative-process-for-haute-debantes/

upcoming solo exhibition

Traditionally, she is a very rich young woman, or at least her parents are. Paradoxically, a haute debutante is not an even richer, haughtier debutante. My idea is that she is something else entirely.

Every woman is a debutante in potential. Every step outside—into society—involves a ritual of presentation. Fashion was once the preserve of the upper classes, but today it belongs to everyone and its inspirations originate in strange places. Punk, ghetto fab, Elizabethan court dress, Russian peasant garb—all this is where fashion comes from now.

Haute couture and pret-a-porter (ready to wear) were born together and both took shape in the 1920s. Haute couture looked back to the traditional high culture of the aristocracy, but it was of that brave new world we live in now. Like the art deco illustrations from which I draw inspiration in this show, it was ultra modern yet rooted in the artisanal skills and aesthetic tastes of an earlier age. The real basis of those skills and tastes was not so much any particular styles, cuts or materials. It was a respect for skill and taste themselves: attention to detail, knowledge of tradition, the practiced hand.

A haute debutante is not an especially rich brat. She may or may not wear haute couture at all. She does take upon herself the task of appearing in the world in a certain way, a way that takes the art of dress seriously. But neither is she bound by the claustrophobic mannerisms of the traditional debutante cotillion. She is haute—above all that. Her knowledge and skill provide her a basis for creativity, allow her to transcend the accepted conventions. The haute debutante aspires to create a world of her own.

-Kukula

The Chase-short film from SHOWstudio by Jennifer Massaux

'It's about the conjuring of the muse - the fleeting spirit of inspiration. Perhaps you can think of Alice in Wonderland only if falling down the rabbit hole led to a world of war. Kukula is an Israeli – America artist born just outside Tel Aviv. She says her artwork is the product of “equal parts princess fantasies and World War II horror stories” captured through the eyes of no ordinary girl.

1. A mysterious beauty of royalty and misery is present in Kukula art. Are you generally more emotionally sensitive?

I guess you would not say I have a very pleased or too happy personality. I believe happiness should come in small doses to really enjoy it, like fine food. However, in other hand, I am a joker, I always make inappropriate jokes. I have been called a princess before but I think I am more of a monkey-princess, because I like shenanigans.

2. Your subjects are 100% female. Why is there no man is the fantasy word of yours?

My kukula art is of a romantic nature meaning, I reflect what I feel and my feelings are feminine. In my inner world, men are visitors and symbolized by the creatures I paint.

Audrey and the Elephant Man(white)

3. Do you think there is a difference between illustration and fine art? Why?

Yes and no. It really depends on what you will describe as illustrations and fine art. I studied illustration in art school and we usually used a narrative or a given subject like a product or a brand. What I have learned from that was how to communicate with my viewer. I don’t like to work with text or other people ideas, which make me not an illustrator, but I do like to be understood-some fine art to me, is just gibberish, which I don’t consider art at all. It is a very hard question.

So, is illustration fine art? We don’t care what all you critics say cause we certainly say, yes!

Chachkies Darlings-Cups & Saucer available finally

Finally they are here!
